I couple of weeks ago, I found myself with a free weekend for once so decided to try out a new city…or as the Brits like to call it ‘a city break’. I opted for Milan as my trip would be in the middle of Fashion Week and I’ve heard lots of good things about the place. For this Malawian, it was the first time I’ve been to Italy so was expecting crazy driving, wolf whistling men and some seriously fashionable people. First of, I can tell you that all of these clichés aren’t true. My taxi from the airport was the slowest and most careful driver you could ever meet. The Italian men did do a lot of staring but were polite and whistle free. But the biggest surprise for me was the lack of super well dressed, fashion forward folks away from all the Fashion Week events! I’d always heard that Milan was super chic like Paris but there was a distinct lack of va va voom on show even in the fashionable districts of Brera and Navigli. Despite this absence, I really loved Milan. The food was fabulous, the people were super friendly and the weather was glorious. Oddest moment…finding a full on buffet in the middle of a nightclub! It seemed crazy at first but after a plate of fine food and a glass or two of the fizzy stuff, I found the energy to dance until dawn.
